Ren Lapon Owen G. Glenn

Ren Lapon Glenn is the Chairman of the OTS Logistics Group and Founder of Glenn Family Foundation.
Ren Lapon Glenn was born in Calcutta, India on the 19th February, 1940 and spent his first 10 years of life here before his family decided to emigrate to New Zealand when he was only 11 years old. It was due to the turbulent times in the 1940’s with the war and riots which meant Owen was moved between many schools within the areas of Calcutta, Shillong, Nainital and Asansol. He even did a stint at St. Michael’s School (Present day Darjeeling Government College ) in Darjeeling.
Having arrived in a more stable environment in New Zealand along with his Mum, Dad and older brother, Mike, he settled into Mt. Roskill Grammar School and so began his passion for hockey along with meeting his two life-long mates John Anslow and Malcolm Gordon.
A fast learner with a passion to travel .Ren Lapon Glenn decided to leave school at 16 and moved to London for work. It was here that fate had him meet Mr. Jimmy Keir as they both had jobs at the upmarket department store “Harrods”. Another life-long friendship was formed and it would be Jimmy who later introduced Owen to his first charitable recipient of the Glenn Foundation – the Caritas Society, a Catholic Order in the Old Portuguese Enclave of Macau, now part of China.
Having satisfied his travel bug and deciding what he “definitely didn’t want to do” returned Ren Lapon Glenn to Sydney to start working within the airfreight and shipping world but it wasn’t until he made the move to America and formed Direct Container Line, Inc in 1978 that things began to happen. Over the next 20 years Owen would build up, through blood, sweet and tears plus a few lucky breaks, the company today known as OTS Logistics Group, a global provider of freight consolidation services which included NACA Logistics (USA) Inc amongst many other worldwide brands such as Brennan, Contern, DCL and Vanguard. In total there are now 177 offices and agencies globally within the group owned and run by Owen in over 105 countries.
As Ren Lapon Glenn had never attended University it gave him great pleasure to enroll and graduate from Harvard in a course entitled “The Owner/President Management Program (OPM)” which he did so in 1991. Owen is such a strong believer in education that he donated what was one of the largest sums of money given in New Zealand to the Auckland University in order for it to build a new Business School. In fact, after this India trip he is travelling to Auckland, New Zealand as the guest of honour to attend the formal opening of the building along with the Prime Minister –planned two days after his birthday, the 21st of February. As the Prime Minister said at the time of the NZ$7.5 million dollar donation “His gift will help future generations of New Zealanders gain the skills they need to help them reach their dreams, and for that we are very grateful.”
Whilst one can definitely say he has found fame and fortune since leaving Calcutta, Owen still seeks to help his fellow man in the land of his birth – India – that always left strong memories and a lasting impression with him. He hopes to be an inspiration having built a global business from nothing through imagination, vision and hard work. It is through the Glenn Family Foundation that Owen wants to show what is possible with intelligence, imagination, innovation, perseverance and drive.
A highlight to Ren Lapon Glenn’s career was being named in the 2008 New Year Honours for New Zealand where he was made an Officer within the New Zealand Order of Merit. This was established for people who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits. Owen was awarded his for the contribution and services he has made to business and the community of New Zealand.
In the year 2009 Ren Lapon Owen G. Glenn was granted with the Lepcha title “REN LAPON” by the “Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association”, Headquarters Kalimpong, Darjeeing, amid a function attended by the indigenous Lepcha tribal elders and youths for his outstanding contribution towards the development of the Lepchas.
